Corroded bore of a cast iron drain pipe
1945 to 1975 homes

Fifty years of acid, from the inside

Cast iron rusts from the inside out, so the outside looks fine right up until the floor does not.

The pipe is becoming scale

Waste water standing in a horizontal run makes sulfuric acid. It eats the bottom of the pipe while the top stays intact, the bore fills with scale, and solids catch on the rough wall.

The same drain twice a year is a wall problem. Snaking buys a few months and takes another scrape off a wall that is already thin.

Camera first, every time

The camera shows the scale, the channeling and the joints, so the scope is a measured length of pipe instead of an estimate. What the footage decides is which of these four you are buying.

Anthony & Sindo saved me a lot of headaches by replacing my sewer drains in my front yard. I had three other companies tell me I shows let them install some sort of rubber or plastic lining in my cast iron sewer drains and Black Ops Plumbing did a video inspection and together we found the bottom of the cast iron pipes were completely gone from years of hard water and draino drain cleaner. If I had lined the cast iron pipes I would have had stoppages in a couple of years.

Is the drain under your floor cast iron?

Cast iron corrodes from the inside out, so the outside looks fine right up until the floor does not. Five questions on what you can see from inside the house, and whether it is worth putting a camera down the line.

Cast Iron Check

About 60 seconds
Step 1 of 5 · The house

What year was the home built?

Homes built roughly 1945 to 1975 were plumbed with cast iron drain lines rather than PVC. Nobody authoritative publishes a service life for the stuff, so the age of the house is a reason to look rather than an answer on its own.

Step 2 of 5 · At the cleanout

Do you know what the drain pipe is?

The cleanout is usually a capped pipe outside, near the house. Cast iron is dark metal and takes a magnet. Plastic does not.

Step 3 of 5 · History

How often does a drain back up?

Solids catch on a rough wall, so the same run blocks again. The same drain twice a year is a wall problem.

Step 4 of 5 · What you see

What are you seeing or smelling?

Waste water standing in a horizontal run makes sulfuric acid. It eats the bottom of the pipe while the top stays intact, and the bore fills with scale.

Step 5 of 5 · What has been tried

Has the line been snaked before?

Snaking buys a few months and takes another scrape off a wall that is already thin.

Questions People Ask

How long does cast iron drain pipe last?

Nobody authoritative publishes a number. The Cast Iron Soil Pipe Institute, the trade association for the companies that made the pipe, states no service life for drain pipe anywhere in its Cast Iron Soil Pipe and Fittings Handbook. Its one durability statement is a design requirement reading "durability exceeding expected life of the building", and the hundred year service records it does publish are for buried water and gas distribution mains rather than for the inside of a drain. So the honest answer is that the age of the house tells you to look and a camera tells you what you have. Homes built 1945 to 1975 are the ones worth looking at, because that is when cast iron went in instead of PVC.

Which homes have cast iron drains?

Homes built roughly 1945 to 1975 were plumbed with cast iron drain lines rather than PVC. If your house is from that window the drains are the pipe to look at. If it is from 1978 to 1995, the supply pipe is the one to check, because that is the polybutylene era.

Why does cast iron fail from the inside out?

Waste water standing in a horizontal run produces sulfuric acid, which eats the bottom of the pipe while the top stays intact. The bore fills with scale, solids catch on the rough wall, and the outside of the pipe looks sound right up until the floor above it does not.

Can you tell what shape the pipe is in without digging?

Yes. A camera run down the line shows the inside wall of the pipe, where the scale and the channeling are, and how much of the run is affected. That takes about ten minutes and it is what the quoted scope is measured from.

My drain clogs in the same place twice a year. Is that the pipe?

Usually yes. A drain that clogs on a schedule in the same place is a pipe wall problem rather than a blockage problem. Snaking buys a few months and takes another scrape off a wall that is already thin.

What are my options once the camera has run?

Four, and the footage decides which. A camera inspection on its own if the line is sound. A spot repair if one section has gone. Pipe lining if the remaining wall will hold a liner. Full replacement if the run is past lining.

Do I get the camera footage?

Yes. The footage is yours, and the quote is built on a measured length of pipe off that footage rather than on an estimate.

Is it Florida soil that eats cast iron, or something else?

Mostly something else, and the pipe industry's own handbook says so. The Cast Iron Soil Pipe Institute's Cast Iron Soil Pipe and Fittings Handbook states that over 95 percent of soils in the United States are non corrosive to cast iron, and names the corrosive exceptions as swamps, peat bogs, tidal marshes and ground contaminated by industrial waste. What ends a residential cast iron drain happens on the inside: the same handbook describes internal corrosion from acids at a pH of 4.3 or lower left in contact with the pipe, which is exactly what standing waste water in a horizontal run produces. That is why the outside of the pipe can look sound while the bore has gone to scale and the bottom of the run is thin.
